Toll in Slovenia

In Slovenia, tolls for motorways and expressways are charged through an e-vignette system. Instead of displaying a physical sticker, your vehicle’s license plate is recorded electronically in the national toll database. Once activated, the e-vignette is linked to your vehicle and verified automatically during checks, ensuring that toll requirements are met.

Toll roads in Slovenia

In Slovenia, tolls apply to all motorways (avtoceste A) and expressways (hitre ceste H). A valid e-vignette is required for the use of these roads.

Some motorways are also part of the European road network and carry an additional E designation alongside their Slovenian code. For example, the A1 is the main motorway axis in Slovenia and is also designated as E57, E59, E61 and E70.

Motorways in Slovenia requiring an e-vignette

All motorways (A roads) in Slovenia require a valid e-vignette. These roads form the core of the national motorway network and are part of the European transport corridors. Driving on these routes without a valid e-vignette is not permitted, and compliance is actively enforced.

A1 (E57, E59, E70) between Šentilj, Maribor, Celje, Ljubljana, Postojna and Koper.
A2 (E61, E70) between Karawanks Tunnel (separate toll), Kranj, Ljubljana, Novo mesto, Brežice and Obrežje.
A3 (E61, E70) between Divača and Fernetiči.
A4 (E59) between Slivnica, Hajdina, Draženci and Gruškovje.
A5 (E653) between Dragučova A1, Beltinci, Murska Sobota and Pince.

Slovenian expressways requiring an e-vignette

In addition to motorways, certain expressways (hitre ceste H roads) are also subject to the e-vignette requirement. These routes are generally shorter but form part of the national toll network. A valid e-vignette is required on these roads.

H3 between A1 and A2 on the Ljubljana ring road.
H4 between Razdrto A1, Nanos, Ajdovščina and Vrtojba.
H5 between Škofije, Dekani, Koper H6 and Dragonja.
H6 between Koper H5 and Lucija.
H7 between Črni dol A5 and Dolga vas.

Toll-free sections and exceptions

The following road sections are exempt from the e-vignette requirement:

H2 between Maribor West and Tezno.
H6 between Koper and Lucija.
A2 between Jesenice and Vrba.

In addition, the Karawanks Tunnel (A2), which connects Slovenia with Austria, is not included in the e-vignette system. A separate toll fee applies for the use of this tunnel.

The toll must be paid at the toll station before entering the tunnel. Payment can be made in cash (EUR) or by credit or debit card. The fee is charged per passage and is not covered by the e-vignette.

Vehicle categories for e-vignettes in Slovenia

In Slovenia, toll charges are determined based on the official vehicle categorisation system. This categorisation is based on the information stated in the vehicle registration certificate. The two key factors are the maximum permissible mass of the vehicle and the height above the front axle, which together determine the applicable category.

By verifying these details in advance, you can ensure that the correct e-vignette category is selected and avoid potential fines.

Goods vehicle / Motorhome

≥ 1.3 m at the front axle

Motorcycle

Passenger car

Passenger cars up to 3.5 t belong to this category. This is the standard class for most privately used vehicles.

Goods vehicle / Motorhome

Vans and motorhomes up to 3.5 t are placed in this category if the height at the front axle is below 1.3 m. The height is determined at the front axle and measured from the ground upwards. As a practical reference, measuring to the centre of the front wheel hub usually provides a good indication. Many standard vans remain below this limit.

Goods vehicle / Motorhome

Vehicles up to 3.5 t with a front axle height of 1.3 m or higher fall into this category. This typically applies to higher vans and larger motorhomes. If the front axle height reaches or exceeds 1.3 m, this class must be selected.

Motorcycle

Motorcycles are classified separately. The axle height rule does not apply to motorcycles.

Toll regulations for heavy vehicles in Slovenia

In Slovenia, vehicles with a maximum permissible weight exceeding 3.5 t, including lorries, buses and other heavy commercial vehicles, are not covered by the e-vignette system. These vehicles are subject to a distance-based electronic toll system.

How tolls are calculated

The toll amount is determined based on the following factors:

  • Distance travelled on Slovenian motorways and expressways

  • Maximum permissible weight of the vehicle

  • Number of axles

  • Road category

  • Environmental classification (EURO emission class)

DarsGo requirement for heavy vehicles

To comply with Slovenian regulations, all vehicles exceeding 3.5 t must be registered in the DarsGo electronic tolling system.

A DarsGo on-board unit (OBU) must be installed in the vehicle. This device automatically records distance travelled and vehicle parameters, and calculates the applicable toll charges.
