Hungarian toll roads

In Hungary, toll motorways and expressways are marked with an M (e-Matrica). A valid e-vignette is required for travel on these designated routes.

The M0 motorway forms the central hub of the entire motorway network.

The motorways can also be labeled with an E. This is the same motorway as indicated with an M,
but E means it is part of a broader European network that spans multiple countries.

A valid vignette is required for the following sections:

M0 (E71, E60, E75), M1 (E60, E65, E75), M2 (E77), M3 (E579, E79, E71), M4 (E60, E79), M5 (E75), M6 (E73), M7 (E71, E65), M15 (E75, E65), M19, M25, M30 (E71, E79), M31 (E71), M35 (E79), M43 (E68), M44, M51, M60, M70 (E653), M76, M85, M86 (E65).

01. Exceptions

Some motorways and expressways in Hungary are exceptions and do not require a vignette:

Pécs Southwest bypass from M60 motorway between roads 58 and 5826. M9 between main road 6 and main road 51. M9 (sign: main road 61) Kaposvár bypass. M4 (sign: main road 4) between Vecsés and the road to Budapest Liszt Ferenc Airport.

The following sections of the M0 motorway:

Between main road 1 and motorway M5 Between motorway M4 (main road 4) and motorway M3 and Megyeri Bridge (between main road 11 and main road 2).

02. County vignettes

In Hungary, you can purchase annual vignettes specifically for individual counties (federal states). These county-specific vignettes are valid for an entire vignette year, starting from January 1 and extending until January 31 of the following year.

Electronic vignettes are available for the following counties:

Bács-Kiskun, Baranya, Békés, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Budapest, Fejér, Csongrád-Csanád, Győr-Moson-Sopron, Hajdú-Bihar, Heves, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Komárom-Esztergom, Nógrád, Pest, Somogy, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, Tolna, Vas, Veszprém and Zala.

Vehicle classes for the Hungarian vignette

In Hungary, toll fees are based on vehicle classification. To determine your category, check your vehicle registration certificate for the 'Maximum permissible mass'.

Cars

This category includes private passenger cars with a maximum of 7 seats, regardless of whether the vehicle is driven for personal or business use. These vehicles must have a valid Hungary vignette (D1 e-matrica) when using motorways or expressways. As long as the maximum permissible mass does not exceed 3,500 kg, this is the standard vignette for most cars.

Vans

This category applies to passenger cars with more than 7 seats (such as minibuses or large MPVs) and to buses with a maximum authorised mass of up to 3,500 kg. Even though these vehicles are under the 3,500 kg limit, they do not qualify for the standard D1 vignette due to their higher seating capacity. Instead, they require the D2 Hungary vignette (e-matrica) when driving on motorways and expressways.

Motorcycles

This category applies exclusively to motorcycles. Riders of motorbikes must purchase a D1M Hungary vignette (e-matrica) when using tolled motorways or expressways. The motorcycle vignette is offered at a reduced price compared to passenger cars, but it provides the same access to the entire toll road network.

Trailers

This category applies to trailers and caravans towed by vehicles in category D2, with a maximum authorised mass of up to 3,500 kg. If a larger passenger vehicle (such as a minibus or large MPV) tows a trailer, both the towing vehicle (D2) and the trailer (U) must have a valid Hungary vignette. The trailer vignette ensures that the total vehicle combination is properly registered in the toll system.

Toll regulations for lorries

In Hungary, lorries are charged using a distance-based toll system rather than a fixed fee. The toll amount depends on factors such as the kilometers driven, the maximum permissible weight, the number of axles, the road category, and the vehicle's environmental classification. To comply with regulations, lorry tolls must be registered through Hungary's HU-GO system.

Avoid penalties: get your e-vignette in advance of your trip

Driving without a valid e-vignette may result in significant fines. Avoid the risk by ensuring you have the correct Hungarian vignette for your vehicle category before you start your journey.

If you accidentally drive on a route requiring a vignette and notice this, you still have 60 minutes to buy a valid vignette. You will then not receive a fine.

In Hungary, toll road use is enforced through an electronic system using license plate recognition. Drivers must purchase an e-vignette linked to their license plate before travel. Automated cameras check compliance, and fines are issued for missing vignettes. Authorities also conduct roadside checks, with a brief grace period available to purchase a vignette and avoid penalties.

Yes, you can transfer the e-vignette to other vehicle registration numbers. However, this is only possible if the vehicle owner changes. In case of a write-off or theft, the e-vignette can be transferred to another vehicle of the same toll class. For more information, contact the toll operator's customer service department:

Only vehicles belonging to the following organizations are exempt:

  • Hungarian Armed Forces: For public order protection and NATO operations.

  • Road Management Authorities: For the management of the public road network.

  • Civil Protection Services: Involved in emergency and disaster response.

  • Transport Authorities: Performing transport-related administrative tasks.

  • Toll Collection and Monitoring Bodies: Responsible for toll enforcement.

  • Other Authorized Bodies: With explicit authorization for vignette exemption.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to postpone the start of validity after purchasing a vignette. Once the purchase is completed, the selected validity period is fixed and cannot be adjusted. Therefore, we recommend carefully selecting the desired start date during the purchase process.
