Toll in Slovakia

In Slovakia, tolls on motorways and expressways are collected using an e-vignette system. Instead of a physical sticker, your vehicle’s license plate is registered electronically in the national toll system. Once your e-vignette is active, your registration is automatically recognised at all checkpoints, ensuring full compliance at all times.

Toll roads in Slovakia

In Slovakia, tolls apply on two types of roads: motorways D (diaľnica) and expressways R (rýchlostná cesta). These roads are marked with a red sign displaying a white D or R together with the route number.

An e-vignette is not required on every section of these roads, but only on designated tolled segments. At the beginning of each tolled section, clearly marked signs indicate that a valid e-vignette is required. The toll is collected exclusively via the e-vignette system, which is linked to your vehicle’s license plate.

Many D and R roads are also part of the European route network and may carry an additional green E designation. This has no impact on the toll requirement and simply indicates that the road is part of the international network connecting Slovakia with neighbouring countries.

As tolled and toll-free sections may overlap or change without obvious transitions, it is not always clear where an e-vignette is required. If you intend to drive on any D or R road in Slovakia, it is strongly recommended to purchase an e-vignette in advance. This ensures full compliance and helps you avoid fines.

Some motorway and expressway sections are designated as “temporarily exempt”, meaning that no e-vignette is currently required. These exemptions typically apply to short bypasses, sections under construction, or roads that have not yet been fully integrated into the e-vignette system.

Even if you only plan to use one of these exempt sections, purchasing an e-vignette in advance is strongly recommended. Roadworks, diversions or navigation errors may still lead you onto a tolled section, where a valid e-vignette is required. Fines for non-compliance are significantly higher than the cost of an e-vignette.

Toll regulations for heavy vehicles in Slovakia

Vehicles with a maximum gross vehicle weight exceeding 3.5 t, including lorries, trucks, buses and motorhomes, are not covered by the Slovakia e-vignette system. These vehicles are subject to the Slovak electronic toll system (e-toll), which charges based on actual road usage.

How the Slovakia truck toll is calculated

The toll for heavy vehicles is calculated based on the following factors:

  • Distance travelled on tolled road sections

  • Number of axles, including any attached trailers

  • Road category (motorways, expressways and selected national roads)

  • Emission class and CO₂ category, in accordance with EU legislation

Since July 2025, the Slovak toll system applies a multi-component tariff structure in which the CO₂ emission class directly affects the toll rate. Vehicles with lower emissions benefit from reduced rates, while higher-emission vehicles are subject to higher charges.

OBU requirement for heavy vehicles

All vehicles exceeding 3.5 t must be equipped with an On-Board Unit (OBU) in order to use tolled roads in Slovakia.

The OBU:

  • Uses GPS and GSM technology to track movement on tolled roads

  • Records distance travelled, road category and axle configuration

  • Automatically calculates and transmits the toll charges

  • Must be updated if the axle configuration changes, for example when attaching a trailer

Frequently asked questions about the e-vignette for Slovakia

Driving on tolled road sections without a valid e-vignette constitutes a traffic offence. Enforcement is carried out through automatic number plate recognition systems and roadside inspections. If no valid e-vignette is registered, a fine may be imposed immediately.

Fines are significantly higher than the cost of an e-vignette, and you are still required to purchase a valid e-vignette in order to continue using tolled roads.

Yes. An e-vignette is required as soon as you enter a tolled motorway or expressway section, regardless of the distance travelled. Road signs clearly indicate where an e-vignette is mandatory.

To ensure compliance, it is recommended to purchase an e-vignette in advance.

No. In Slovakia, all vehicles with a maximum gross vehicle weight of up to 3.5 t are subject to the e-vignette requirement, regardless of the type of propulsion, including petrol, diesel, electric or hybrid.

Electric and hybrid vehicles are charged at the same rate as conventional vehicles. Only vehicles exceeding 3.5 t are excluded from the e-vignette system and are subject to the separate electronic toll system for heavy vehicles.

The Slovakia e-vignette can be purchased online at Tollvignettes.eu, as well as at selected sales points such as border vending machines, petrol stations and retail outlets.

Purchasing online at Tollvignettes.eu is the fastest and most secure option. Your e-vignette is activated immediately after payment, your vehicle is registered directly in the national toll system, and you avoid queues or delays at physical sales points.

Yes, but this is not always the most convenient option. E-vignettes are available at border petrol stations and vending machines, but queues are common and not all locations accept international payment methods.

Purchasing online at Tollvignettes.eu is faster and more reliable. Your vehicle is registered immediately in the national toll system, allowing you to use tolled roads without delay and avoid queues at the border.

Yes. If you are towing a trailer or caravan with a maximum gross vehicle weight of up to 3.5 t, a separate e-vignette is required. This is in addition to the e-vignette for the towing vehicle. Both license plates must be correctly registered in the system at the time of purchase.

If the trailer or caravan exceeds 3.5 t, the e-vignette system does not apply. In that case, the vehicle combination is subject to the electronic toll system for heavy vehicles.

In practice, this means that for most vehicle combinations, two e-vignettes are required: one for the towing vehicle and one for the trailer or caravan.

E-vignettes in Slovakia’s neighbouring countries

If your journey continues beyond Slovakia, it is important to note that several neighbouring countries also operate an e-vignette system for motorways and expressways. These systems function in a similar way: the vehicle’s license plate is registered electronically, enforcement is carried out through automatic checks and roadside inspections, and different validity periods are available depending on the duration of use.
