Toll roads in the Czech Republic

In the Czech Republic, tolls apply to all motorways marked with D. A valid e-vignette must be purchased for the vehicle’s license plate before using these roads. The license plate is registered in the national electronic toll system, enabling automatic verification without the need for physical stickers or toll booths.

Some motorways are also part of the European road network and carry an additional E designation alongside their Czech code. These E routes indicate international connections across multiple countries.

Vehicle categories for Czech e-vignettes

The price of an e-vignette in the Czech Republic is determined by the vehicle’s emission category for vehicles up to 3.5 t. Vehicles are classified based on their environmental performance, which directly affects the applicable toll rate.

Fully electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles are generally exempt from the e-vignette requirement; however, an exemption must be applied for and approved in advance. Plug-in hybrid vehicles may qualify for reduced e-vignette rates, depending on their CO₂ emissions and registration.

All other vehicles up to 3.5 t are subject to standard e-vignette rates. It is the responsibility of the vehicle owner to select the correct emission category when purchasing an e-vignette.

Emission categories for Czech e-vignettes

Frequently asked questions about Czech e-vignettes

Yes. All passenger vehicles up to 3.5 t with four wheels must have a valid e-vignette to use Czech motorways. Motorcycles, trikes and trailers are exempt.

License plates are checked digitally by the Police and Customs Administration using cameras in patrol vehicles, at control points and at rest areas. If a vehicle is not registered with a valid e-vignette, fines of up to CZK 20,000 may be imposed, significantly higher than the cost of the e-vignette itself.

To avoid penalties, ensure that the required e-vignette is purchased before travelling.

An e-vignette can be purchased directly via Tollvignettes.eu. Select the required validity period (1 day, 10 days, 30 days or 1 year), enter the license plate number and country of registration, and complete the payment using a secure method such as credit card or PayPal.

Once the purchase is completed, the license plate is registered in the national toll system, and a confirmation is provided by email. This ensures immediate validity without the need for physical documents or additional procedures.

E-vignettes in the Czech Republic are available with four validity periods: 1 day, 10 days, 30 days or 1 year. The validity period starts from the date selected during purchase.

For example, a 10-day e-vignette starting on 1 July remains valid until 10 July. This allows drivers to choose a validity period that matches the duration of their stay or travel requirements.

There are no toll booths or physical stickers. Compliance is enforced through an electronic system using cameras and police patrols. License plates are automatically scanned on motorways and checked against the national toll database.

If a license plate is not registered with a valid e-vignette, the vehicle may be flagged and a fine may be issued. It is therefore essential to purchase the required e-vignette before entering any tolled motorway section.

Driving without a valid e-vignette is considered a traffic offence and may result in substantial fines. Penalties can reach up to CZK 20,000, often significantly exceeding the cost of the e-vignette itself.

Compliance is monitored through frequent checks by police patrols and automated camera systems, particularly on major routes and near border crossings. To avoid penalties, ensure that the required e-vignette is purchased before using Czech motorways.

Fully electric vehicles are exempt from the e-vignette requirement. However, an exemption must be applied for and approved in advance so that the vehicle is registered in the national toll system.

Without a registered exemption, the vehicle may be identified as non-compliant during checks. Ensure that the exemption is arranged prior to using Czech motorways.
